Learning Outcomes

  • Able to cope with patients who breathe normally but are unresponsive
    • Assess the scene for danger.
    • Assess the casualty's level of consciousness
    • Demonstrate how to open a casualty’s airway and check for breathing
    • Demonstrate how to place an unresponsive casualty in the recovery position
  • Able to deal with victims with abnormal breathing and slow response
    • Recognize the need to start cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
    • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a manikin
  • Know how to use an automated external defibrillator safely
    • Identify safety considerations when using an automated external defibrillator (AED)
    • List differences in the procedure when using an automated external defibrillator on a child
  • The automatic external defibrillator can be used safely
    • Demonstrate the correct placement of AED electrode pads on a manikin
    • Follow AED voice prompts accurately
    • Demonstrate how to combine the use of an automatic external defibrillator with minimal CPR interruption on a mannequin
    • Demonstrate the safe delivery of AED shock
    • State the procedure to follow if the casualty shows signs of life and starts to breathe normally
    • Identify the information required when handing over the casualty to the emergency services

Assessment

This qualification can be assessed through practical demonstrations and written/oral interviews.
